About Moon & Yarn

Modern fiber artist from Pittsburgh, PA.

WELCOME TO MY LITTLE SPACE ON THE INTERNET!

My goal is to give you a behind the scenes look at what’s coming next for me and Moon & Yarn, to provide a positive light when things may seem dark, and to be a source of information in the fiber arts world. Fiber arts has made a major, positive impact on my life throughout the years and I am sure it can be helpful to someone else, too. Soft fibers, creative projects like weaving, knitting, punch needling, natural dyeing fibers, spinning my own yarn and other fiber projects can be a great way to destress and unwind.

Now, since you have made your way here, I think now is a great time to start… Let’s take a brisk, but sunshine filled walk down memory lane…

HOW IT ALL STARTED

A long yarn ago, in a weaving far, far away…

Just kidding, my weavings are never that far away, but the yarn is always long…

In the spring of 2017, I decided it was time to find a new hobby. I needed something to fulfill me creatively in a way that my full-time graphic design job was unable to do. So, I did what anyone does when they’re looking for something new these days… I browsed the internet and ended up on one of my favorite online storefronts. Etsy. On Etsy, I found a beginner’s weaving kit that had to be shipped to me all the way from Scotland. This meant that my excitement to begin creating woven tapestries was at a standstill until it could arrive from overseas. While I waited, not so patiently, I went out and purchased my very first yarn haul alongside of some macrame hoops from a local craft store. From there, I started creating rya knot wall hangings until my weaving kit could arrive.

It took a few weeks, but my first weaving was immediately started the very night it appeared on my doorstep! I was hooked instantly, even though the process wasn’t something I was able to pick up right away. My first weaving took me three weeks to complete. From there, I bought books, read blogs, and instantly began following other weavers to help me home in on my new hobby. I knew then that I found the one activity I could do forever and enjoy it each and every time.

My First Weaving

Created in 2017

Now, not much has changed… I try to take some time out of every day to weave. I’ve made a separate Instagram account for my weavings, began an Etsy Shop, and even began The Woolies Podcast with another fiber artist. While all of this has been a large leap outside of my comfort zone, weaving has led me to discover a handful of other fiber arts like knitting, punch needle, handspun yarn, carding batts, using natural dyes for yarn, and more. I even teach beginner weaving classes at local events and yarn shops! One day, I hope to learn how to weave on a floor loom, too, and when I do, I’ll make sure to share that experience with all of you here, stay tuned.

Now, in 2021, a lot has changed. I have grown as an artist and a small business owner. As the year pushes forward, you can expect more insight into current projects both here on this blog and through the Woolies Podcast. I will keep you up-to-date on my favorite local makers, dyes, techniques, and more as I continue on my fiber art journey. I still have that weaver fever and I hope you catch it, too.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME

Now that you have learned all about my passions for yarn, I think it is important that you learn a little about me outside of the fibers I surround myself with on the regular. My name is Bryanne Boring-Miscoe, and yes, my last name is actually Boring, but I like to think I am anything but. I am currently a proud resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where I live with my fiancé, David, and our two cats, Avery and June. We bought our first home together in 2020 and absolutely love being in the city. I am definitely a city girl, through and through, but I didn’t grow up here. I grew up in a very small town called Central City which doesn’t even have a stop light, and truly isn’t even a city at all, funny enough.

I have always been a creative at heart, even if I didn’t always excel in art class growing up. I enjoy expressing myself through scrapbooking and photography and these joys lead me to follow a degree in graphic design. In 2015, I graduated from college and got an associates degree in Graphic Design. Now, I am living my drem job by being able to focus on what matters most to me which includes weaving and growing Moon & Yarn.

Outside of my work life, I love to travel and explore new places and would love for you to recommend a new travel destination! I also love eating breakfast food (at any and all hours of the day), telling both of my cats that I love them (unconditionally, and forever), and adventuring around the city with my friends.  You can usually find me drinking iced coffees regardless of how cold it is outside, participating in a DIY class, practicing yoga, singing along to my favorite pop punk band, or preparing for my favorite holiday, Halloween.
